What do you do for recreation? Our recreation almost always has something to do with nature and scenery. This is why there’s a pun on the word recreation= re-creation. I want to share things about God’s re-creation.
I’m no artist but I know that when an artist potter is not happy with their clay creation, before firing they can reclaim the clay. They smash it, soak it in water, dry it, get the air bubbles out and start again.
My dear friends, this is what happened to this planet upon which we live.
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark… I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
genesis 6:11-14,17
We don’t really talk much about this–not in church or in our homes. (Well, except my husband and I do!) True, almost every christian home has a kid-toy of Noah’s ark or a cartoon story book. Yes, the children hear the story in Sunday School or Christian school. I haven’t heard a sermon about it. Have you?
Do all of us think this is a storybook fairy tale?
The whole earth was flooded higher than the mountains. The rainstorm and volcano eruptions made that water world a heated water tornado. It was a burning urn of swirling, muddy slurry. Then as the earth’s waters dried, they deposited and layered sediments. The receding waters carved the earth. The earth’s plate tetonics moved the ground up, down and around. As everything cooled, the ice age shaped parts of the earth. And now, according to biblical genealogical records, four thousand years later we have God’s re-creation. The nature and scenery that we all love and enjoy is not God’s creation–it is God’s re-creation.
Friend, if God can do this remake with planet earth, can’t He do it with our lives? I have made so many mistakes–what a foolish young teenager I was. And yet He has helped me and changed me and taken my messes and made them into a message.
This is God’s speciality! He takes messes and remakes them! He did it for planet earth. He did it for Jesus. The enemy thought he had won when Jesus, the Son of God was crucified. A horrible mess? But God made it into the most beautiful message–my salvation! Your salvation is in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
This is God’s speciality! It is one of the things God does best! Re-creation! Second chances! Remakes! Do-overs! Redemption! Renovation! Restoration!
He did it for me! He can do it for you! Here’s a YouTube talk about how God remade someone else!
This week we did a day trip in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge! The scenery was astounding! We saw Mount Hood from many different viewpoints. We were reminded again and again of God’s gorgeous creation re-creation!!
May a view of mountains remind us all that Jesus is in the life restoration business! Re-creations!
When my husband and I see a mountain, hilariously we break into song! We yodel the chorus of this retro gospel song that’s below.

If you’re wondering how the flood waters could cover the tops of the mountains, you need to realize that those high mountains didn’t exist until the end of the flood. The mountains were lower, and then when the plates started colliding in the plate-tectonic event, the mountains were pushed up high and that’s what caused the water to recede off the continents. The rising mountains and the receding water is what carved the face of the Earth such as we see in the Grand Canyon.
