I often laugh at the sign I see on glass jars, stationed by cash registers, that says: Fear Change? Leave it here! 😂
Embracing changes in life though, for many of us, is not a laughing matter. It can be really hard especially for those of us who prefer control and maybe have a habit of controlling.
And that leads me to my story about being flexible. It was a Monday morning and during devotions, after Bible reading and prayer, I left time to listen to the Holy Spirit and what the Lord would say to me on this day. This below is what I sensed He was saying:
A new month! A new day! Newness! I AM making all things new! New is change and you don’t like change but you will like change.

Well that seemed like a nice positive word from the Holy Spirit and I was happy about that. I learned that a missionary we supported was going to change her status, and change her country she lived in–big alterations in her life. That’s what I was thinking of–not me, but others. Maybe God was speaking of the big changes in others’ lives and pray for them?

But no, Change! Within the hour my husband and I realized we did not have the free week ahead that we were looking forward to. We had group party in our home that we had forgotten! I was surprised but not worried because there would be two days to clean, shop, and prepare the dinner.
But no, Change! It was going to be on Wednesday, not Thursday. Not two days to prepare but one! Sadly, I freaked out at this change. Upset. Contentious. Worried. Frustrated. (Forgive me Lord.)
Then the next day, Change! There were not going to be ten people that I was preparing for. Only four people were coming over. I had gone overboard with wild preparations and little time.
I can hear you all chuckling, like, what’s the big deal. Those are very little modifications to a person’s life and you are harassed about those small things? I agree. Yet, if those small changes upset me emotionally, how much more are big changes, huge changes in people’s lives so difficult to navigate. That was my lesson.
Here’s my two important thoughts for your consideration:
- We are not able to completely control our circumstances in life. God is in control. When we Jesus-followers attempt to control, we are participating with a spirit of witchcraft and divination. It is that serious. Instead, christians surrender, submit to God and live open handedly, walking in prayerful, humble, obedience to our Sovereign Lord. Flexibility, adaptability, resilience, yielding, compliant, and amenable are godly character qualities opposed to control.
- Here is a prayer I pray for myself and those who have changes in their lives. It was created by Nufar Miryan Ben Barck (https://prayer-cards.com/en/prayer-cards/) This prayer was in my prayer cards from Israel. I pray in the name of Jesus, the Messiah. But I have never thought of praying for these things, and so this prayer has blessed me. It expresses my heart’s hope for myself and for my family who have had big differences this year. It has helped me like change as God has answered my prayers. I encourage you to pray it out loud, in the name of Jesus the Messiah. Pray for yourself and for others you care about that are going through change.
Please my King
Prayer created by Nufar Miryan Ben Barck
Help me to receive change with love
and that I should agree to be in movement.
Place in me faith that all is directed towards my ultimate good.
That I should feel no fear.
Let it be Your will that I should discover the gift of “what is”
that is found in change.
Amen
Epilogue: We had the best time with the two other couples that came to the Wednesday dinner. We laughed, ate way too much, told our stories and enjoyed each other. After dinner we prayed together for our families, our children, their spouses and our grandchildren. I was ready, relaxed and happy. The Lord gave me a word. Here it is below:
People first not food–just like money first, not people, is wrong. It begins in your heart–what you look forward to. Keep your focus on the fellowship and the prep will follow. Keep your focus on Jesus and the fellowship will follow.
