Unity

There is an amazing secret sacred mystery surrounding the concept of unity. I’m wondering why it took me almost fifty years to see it?  I’m especially thinking of unity in marriage. It’s not something that you see very often these days in marriage.

I’m thinking of some old friends, Lyndah and Jeramee. They were God fearers but I don’t think they’d call themselves “christians”. But they looked at the world around them and saw marriages breaking apart all over. They didn’t want that to happen to their marriage. They weren’t really praying people so they didn’t have God’s wisdom from the Bible or from Holy Spirit words. But they were an extremely intelligent and brilliant couple who thought deeply and liked each other.  They wondered how they could live their life so their marriage would not be taken out like almost fifty percent of the marriages in the USA.  It was either by chance, intellect or by Providence that they landed on the concept of unity.  They decided to work together in all things. They decided and chose unity. Individuals, yet united in all things together. Honoring unity as much as possible. They started a business together, built a house together, brainstormed creative ideas together, shared childcare and household chores, and did recreation together.  They stuck together like glue and worked out differences and came into agreement. Without a relationship with God, they tapped into His heart—the concept of unity!  They are still together after all these almost fifty years! Unity is God’s mysterious stuff, and it works!

If there is an area in marriage that you can tap into God’s heart of unity—you will succeed in that area and thrive!  You can’t help but do that because it is “God material”. You don’t even have to believe in God or consider yourself a christian—it still works because it is God’s heart and one of God’s favorite topics. He’s very smart and knows what works!

How do I know this?  Well, here’s some Bible verses that show it.

Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.  UNITY!

John 10:30 I and the Father are one.  UNITY!

Ecclesiastes 4:12  And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.  UNITY!

John 17:23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.  UNITY!

Psalm 133:1 How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!  UNITY!

Ephesians 4:3  Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.  UNITY!

Well, I can only start with me as a wife. My husband is my ‘head’ (1 Cor. 11:10) and Jesus is his ‘Head’.  In the spirit realm the angels always respect their Head, God. I’m sure it makes my own angels, (Matt. 18:10), very sad when I disrespect my husband as head of our marriage. I’m sure it changes the atmosphere in my home—I know it does. The angels have been given the ministry to accomplish help for us, the saints, (Hebrews 1:14).  Without wives respecting their ‘heads’, the angels cannot work/move forward with help. At church when there is unity, for example, wives agree to respect their ‘head’ and authority, there’s peace, power and God’s Presence. The unity of women in the church, agreeing on the authority that God has given their husbands is a powerful unity, and as the women pray together, the angels can help work out God’s will. This way women’s prayers move mountains. I have so much to learn in this area.

Together is a key word. Together with Jesus. As a christian I am together with Jesus, seated together in Heavenly places. (Ephesians 2:5-7) I reign because of Jesus and I am with Jesus. Jesus rules so I rule also—together—me in Him and Him in me. This is the authority that I have with Jesus. It’s not just His Name—its Jesus and me together. “Together” is the key word.  Unity! There’s nothing that can stand against me and Jesus together—unity. There’s no thing that can stand against a husband and wife in unity together in Heavenly places with Jesus. Love, Authority, Unity.

So I started to learn how powerful unity is when my husband and I began to pray together.  We would see answers to our prayers. We grew closer together. We enjoyed each other more. We started getting more and more on the same page.  We enacted “Stop, drop and pray!” for emergency requests that came in. I noticed that when we both agreed and were united on anything, whatever it was, it became a powerhouse. Working together as a team in unity was a powerhouse of blessing and movement forward. Yes, true, as long as it was a good project or a good idea, you’re right.  Unity in the wrong direction is also a powerhouse—oops!

So, here’s my thesis.  There is nothing as powerful as a husband and wife praying together in unity.  Unity in marriage is God’s design for a successful marriage.  If the wife is unified with Jesus and the husband is unified with Jesus and the two of them come together in prayer, unified with God—nothing is able to withstand them because they are tapping into God’s will and plan for marriage and life.

So, I ask you.  Why are mature christian couples not praying together in unity?
