Generational Cleansing

I grew up in loving Baptist churches and my dad and mom were beloved leaders in that group. My Mom’s mom and her father were Baptist believers, and church attenders too. I often thank God for the amazing heritage He plopped me into. I accepted Jesus as my Savior as a child.

So you can understand that something like ‘generational cleansing’ was not in my repertoire or on my radar for most of my life.

Even so, it was clear in the Bible pages that I read daily.

I learned about generational cleansing when I took an online Bible college course about deliverance. Only then did I see it in the scriptures. I wondered why I had never been told about this. It was quite a journey of learning. I’d like to share it with you.

The main points are two-fold:

  • God made man generational. The best idea for us to understand this is how our health care professionals always ask for a generational history of disease, investigating the genes of our parents and ancestors. That’s the physical realm. In the spiritual realm it is similar. We find it easy to take the spiritual path of our parents, be it good or sinful. We even make a saying of this concept. “The abused becomes the abuser.” Read this fascination and confirming summary–a photo I took from the 2024 Winter issue of I.C.R. magazine.
  • The second issue is that our spiritual enemy (the evil one, Satan, and his evil spirits) is legalistic. (God is not legalistic–He is merciful, but the evil one is legalistic.) The best way to comprehend this might be a border crossing analogy. If I cross from USA to Canada (countries not at war) and don’t stop at the border crossing I would be in big trouble. But if I crossed the border into North Viet Nam and did not stop, I would be shot. The commandments that God gives us in the Bible, its guidelines and precepts, are like protective borders to keep us from crossing into enemy territory. When we continuously sin and violate God’s laws without repentance, the enemy stakes a claim that we crossed into their territory, holds us captive, and won’t release the generations. In God’s Kingdom Jesus blood forgives us but in enemy territory the goal is to kill, steal and destroy. They say, “You said a ‘yes’ to our side and we are holding you to it.”

Once the Lord taught me about these Kingdom concepts I started seeing them all over in my ‘Bible in a Year’ reading. I would mark “Generational” beside the passages, and there were many that were highlighted to me.

keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

Exodus 34:7

God made us generationally connected physically and spiritually and He has told us about this. (I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.) We are not responsible for the wrong doings of our parents (ancestors) but what they did, good and bad, does affect us.

  • Abraham lied about his wife and said she was his sister because he was afraid. So did Isaac. Jacob lied in order to secure his brother’s blessing. But God’s promise was made to all three generations.
  • Abraham had two opposing offspring, Isaac and Ishmael. One was from Abraham’s faith,Isaac, and he was blessed onward in the generations to Jesus. The other was from Abraham’s unbelief–his taking control of his life–and Ishmael’s generations turned away from Creator God. Both lines of descendants are still enemies of each other.
  • Abraham’s good and sinful actions (faith vs unbelief/control) affected his son Isaac’s destiny. Isaac had two sons who also were also in contention, Jacob and Esau. Isaiah 34 says those two lines of descendants are still in contention, Edom and Israel. Furthermore, Jacob’s sons from his two wives (Rachel and Leah) were in severe contention. The sons of Leah sold Joseph, the son of Rachel, into slavery.
  • Lot lived in Sodom and the angels got him and his family out of there. (Read Genesis 20) Who were the descendants of Lot’s daughters’ incestuous plan–the self-handling, independent thinking, not of God plan? The Moabites and the Amorites who were the continuous, idolatrous enemies of God’s people.
  • But Ruth, a Moabite, made a generational cleansing type of statement, (see the verse below) and she was chosen to be in the Hall of Fame of the ancestors of Jesus, the Christ. (Matthew 1)
  • Generational cleansing is important and biblical!

And Naomi said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.”But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.” When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped speaking to her.

So after my journey of generational cleansing, and deliverance, even from a godly heritage, the Lord has opened up to me the ministry of the Holy Spirit–using manifestation gifts to do spiritual work. (Not usually part of Baptist churches.) God has given me freedom from shame, from being “religious”, from “legalism” and “rote Christianity”. He’s given me intimacy with the Father and excitement in and for our relationship. I humbly give thanks to God for His Kindness in opening my eyes and ears to generational cleansing and deliverance!

And the most amazing things of all–I’m still growing! In my old age (73!) I’m still learning more about Jesus and growing closer to Him!!
